Following my graduation from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently observing the liberal arts experience in my teaching career (Brown University 1971-75) I'm an advocate for education that integrates studying the arts and studies of other disciplines. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate and an MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. This isn't a surprise since the ethnomusicology department is located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is located in the college of letters and Science's department of music. It is possible to pursue many interests is something I really appreciate. I very much enjoy instructing both undergraduates (majors and non-majors), which is why I've written three textbooks: Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) and graduate students. There are times when I'm primarily a professor and other periods in which I do administrative work (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Director of Undergraduate Advising, 1992-1998, and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science in 1994-98).
